Client & Transaction Risk Director
The Business Control Officers (BCO) play a pivotal role in guiding the business to identify and understand the risks faced and the controls needed which are integral to reducing risk and safeguarding our customers and colleagues. BCOs are critical to the success of the Risk Management Lifecyle and play a role in Planning, Identifying, Assessing, Mitigating, Monitoring, and Reporting. BCOs are members of the First Line of Defense (1LOD) who:
  • Provide leadership and coaching to 1LOD to proactively identify and effectively manage risks.
  • Translate and educate 1LOD to enable and drive business relevant implementation of Second Line of Defense (2LOD) risk management frameworks, policies, taxonomies, and inventories.
  • Review, validate, and test 1LOD activities to ensure adequate control design and effective control operation.
  • Provide credible challenge to 1LOD colleagues, ensuring safeguard and risk mitigation measures are upheld in decision making and adherence to 2LOD frameworks and policies prior to 2LOD review.
  • Drive two-way collaboration across 1LOD and 2LOD; liaise between 1LOD and 2LOD to drive engagement throughout the risk management lifecycle.
  • Collaborate and coordinate across the organization to help navigate and mitigate horizontal risk promoting resilience and ensuring safety and soundness.
  • Document, aggregate and report risk in accordance with the risk management lifecycle.
Client & Transaction Risk Director for Payments is a senior leader responsible for leading a team of colleagues and advising the business in the onboarding, client due diligence, transaction monitoring and risk related process for Payment's customers. The manager will partner with business leaders and various 1LOD and 2LOD stakeholders to understand and drive the on-going success of the business's Due Diligence, Enhanced Due Diligence, and on-going Transaction Monitoring Program. The position will advise and support the Bank's Enhanced Due Diligence protocols for both new and existing customers, including co-managing programs and processes to support the examination of potential AML risk to the Bank.
The role will provide risk intelligence to guide internal business partners and customers in the reliable and trusted growth of payments. The position is responsible for working with the business to identify, assess and monitor potential risks, as well as strengthen key controls, in the due diligence and onboarding of customers. This could include through the Know Your Customer (KYC) process and verification and the ongoing reduction of risk through transaction monitoring.
Position Responsibilities:
Collaborates with various stakeholders on developing and executing a due diligence and transaction monitoring program and control framework
  • Identifies tools and regulatory requirements, as well as builds and maintains internal controls in the oversight of client risk and transaction risk.
  • Provides leadership and coaching to 1LOD to proactively identify and effectively manage client risk and transaction risks.
  • Educates all colleagues to enable and drive business relevant implementation of risk management frameworks.
  • Drives two-way collaboration between 1LOD and 2LOD to achieve engagement across the risk management lifecycle.
  • Creates broad reporting for various stakeholders, including 1LOD leadership to ensure awareness of risks associated with enhanced client risk and transaction monitoring.
Provide key risk guidance and advice for the 1LOD customer due diligence policies and procedures, as well as ownership of the enhanced due diligence framework for initial and on-going refresh of client due diligence
  • Partners with the 1LOD in the development and implementation of frameworks and programs to ensure effective measures are in place to manage risks associated with client onboarding, ongoing due diligence, and transaction risk.
  • Ensure proper escalation of client(s) and/or product types that present heightened levels of risk to the Bank.Provides challenge to 1LOD colleagues, ensuring safeguard and risk mitigation measures are upheld in decision making and adherence to 2LOD frameworks and policies prior to 2LOD review
Partner with various 1LOD, 2LOD, and 3LOD stakeholders to understand and execute the Bank's enterprise risk management and operational risk frameworks related to client risk and transaction monitoring
  • Liaison with 1LOD for all exam related activities including regulatory, 2LOD, Internal Audit, various internal Risk Pillars, related to client risk and transaction monitoring. Gather data, answer questions, review materials, responses and validate 1LOD remediation work (e.g. artifacts, action plans, etc).
  • Liaison with Compliance to manage impact of applicable laws, rules and regulations (current, new and revised) on Comerica's products, services, business processes and operations; provide support and guidance with implementation questions and specific fact-based scenarios.
HR and Financial Management
  • Selects, motivate, and retain high performing talent, cultivating a spirit of teamwork and continuous improvement with shared goals and objectives.
  • Supports the development and growth of direct reports through on-going direction, coaching and performance management.
  • Manages expenses and budget associated with the team and the work managed.
  • Other duties assigned.

Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's from an accredited university in Business, Finance, or a related field or in lieu of education, 6 years in Risk Management Financial Services or related
  • 10 or more years Risk Management, Compliance, Audit or related field
  • Experience in advising, providing subject matter expertise, and credibly challenging colleagues in a risk and control environment
  • 10 or more years understanding of various risk types/pillars, risk management, controls, and compliance concepts and frameworks
  • 10 or more years project support / project management skills - ability to provide direction, track progress and ensure alignment with program requirements
  • 10 or more years proficiency with risk management software, MS Office Suite, and other related technology tools
