Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Research Assistant to join the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology's (FSIBT) group.

In this exciting role, you will assist in the preparation and analysis of samples for several scheduled beamtimes at laser-ion-acceleration facilities. The samples will be prepared and analyzed at LBNL using equipment in a cleanroom and measured using resistance measurement at low temperature as well as other tools such as photoluminescence. This effort will contribute to critical milestones of a funded project. The Fusion Sciences & Ion Beam Technology group has an ongoing effort in qubit fabrication and characterization and has been awarded beam time at several international high power laser facilities over the last years.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist with the preparation and analysis of samples for beamtimes at high power laser facilities.
  • Collaborate with other groups at LBNL (for example, at the Molecular Foundry) for sample analysis preparation assistance as needed.
  • Under supervision, take data at the low temperature facility to characterize IV-curves of the samples.
  • Participate in group and team meeting discussions.
  • Assist with the maintenance of a lab notebook and detailed instrumentation and sample logs.
  • Follow EH&S guidelines to ensure the safety of self and others in the lab and office spaces.

What is Required:

  • Be detail-oriented with good communication, writing and troubleshooting skills.
  • Rudimentary theoretical knowledge and practical experience with laboratory systems, such as vacuum cleanliness, typical cleanroom equipment, IV-measurements, and record keeping.
  • Rudimentary knowledge of data acquisition and analysis coding using scientific programming languages (Python, etc.).
  • General knowledge of an experimental laboratory.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or similar experience.
  • Rudimentary experience in integration of hardware to computer control systems.
  • Experience with analysis codes such as Python.
  • Experience in data acquisition and statistical analysis

Notes:

  • This is a full time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position is expected to pay $21.79 - $26.75 per hour for job code 588.1, which fits within the full salary range of $21.79 - $31.69 per hour. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
