Overview

  • NOAA NCCOS seeks highly qualified candidates for a Coral reef Scientist position on an interdisciplinary research team of contract and federal employees. The integrated research team will support the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Marine Spatial Ecology Division (), which is a nationally recognized scientific research program that conducts spatial ecological analysis, statistical modeling, ecological forecasting, and predictive mapping to support marine ecosystem management, conservation, and spatial planning. The candidate will be employed via a contract to work remotely at the NOAA National Ocean Service in Beaufort, NC.
  • We seek candidates with experience in collecting field data according to NOAA's National Coral Reef Monitoring Program's protocols for Coral Demographics and Benthic Community Assessment. Experience in marine sciences is strongly preferred.

Core Responsibilities

  • Collect field data on corals and benthic communities. Specific activities include:
    • Conduct Coral Demographics and Benthic Community Assessments protocols for National Coral Reef Monitoring Program;.

Required

  • Demonstrated excellence in field collections of coral reef data according to NCRMP (Atlantic protocols);
  • Ability to identify species of Caribbean corals, and functional groups of macroalgae, sponges, and other key species for benthic communities;
  • Current NOAA scientific diving certification;
  • Ability to comply with NOAA NCRMP field protocols and NOAA dive safety protocols;
  • Ability to travel and work on from a small boat;
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and with a team;
  • Demonstrated experience to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented, multi-project, multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Non-U.S. citizens must possess current documentation authorizing employment in the United States and meet the minimum security requirements for access to federal facilities;

Preferred

  • Minimum of Master's degree or equivalent experience in Marine Science or Biology;
  • Experience with NCRMP-specific data entry and QAQC;
  • Experience with scientific diving for coral reef fieldwork, specifically fo NCRMP (benthic team) in the U.S. Caribbean

CSS is predominantly a Federal Contractor and is subject to following the terms of Executive Orders.
