Job Description

We are currently seeking a part time Environmental GIS Specialist to support our national portfolio of utility-scale wind and solar renewable energy projects. This position reports to the Vice President of Environmental Permitting and can be based in our Charlottesville, Virginia office or remote. This position works closely with the 12 environmental professionals of the Environmental Team to support environmental permitting and regulatory compliance for the development, construction, and operation of the Projects.

Primary responsibilities include managing geospatial data via ArcGIS resulting from studies completed by environmental contractors, providing visually appealing and informative maps for internal and external use (site visits, agency meetings, stakeholder presentations, permit applications and conservation plans), completing resource assessments of potential greenfield sites or project acquisitions, managing project tracking software for environmental project management (i.e., Smartsheet), enter and track purchase requests/change orders through internal approval system, manage permit compliance for operating projects (i.e., environmental studies, agency reporting, etc.). Work will focus on wildlife, cultural resources, wetlands, and Phase 1 ESAs, but may include other permitting and compliance disciplines.

The ideal candidate has strong GIS skills and is committed to renewable energy. He or she must be a highly motivated and self-driven individual with strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and strong problem-solving skills. Working knowledge of ArcGIS software (including ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro) to design informative and concise maps detailing project site plans, resource impacts, and potential environmental hazards is critical to success in this role. Candidates can be based in our Charlottesville, Virginia corporate office or remote.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages geospatial data resulting from field studies and other risk assessment work products provided by consultants to ensure high quality and effective development work
  • Use ArcGIS software to design informative and concise maps detailing project site plans, resource impacts, and potential environmental hazards
  • Supports Environmental Managers to incorporate environmental data into informative maps
  • Interfaces effectively with Apex's Development, GIS, Wind Resource, and Construction Management (engineering) departments to ensure that accurate environmental constraints data is available for project design
  • Creating, developing, and maintaining web GIS content, including map services, feature services, web maps, and web applications, with ESRI products, to support discipline specific GIS.
  • Assist Environmental Managers with data capture, digitization, data mining, and quality control of data required to perform project specific GIS requests.
  • Completes work products as appropriate; such as desktop and field based environmental risk reviews for siting and acquisitions USFWS Tier 1, Tier 2 Risk Reviews, and ECPG Stage 1 reviews BBCS development in coordination PowerPoint presentations for agency meetings construction compliance plans and training materials
  • Facilitate data conversions from AutoCAD to ArcGIS file formats. Experience with AutoCAD is helpful, but the majority of work will be performed in ESRI's suite of GIS products
  • Support Environmental Managers with impact analyses for wildlife and environmental constraints
  • Prepare applications and respond, as necessary, to federal, state, and local government requests
  • Other duties as assigned

This position is a contracted role through a staffing agency and is temporary in nature. The position will be located in an assigned active project development area, as determined by the Apex business needs and outlined in the job description, and may be subject to separation based on completion or de-prioritization of the assigned project.Typical engagements can last 3-12 months.

Qualifications

To succeed as an Environmental GIS Specialist at Apex Clean Energy, you'll need to display excellence within the following criteria:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Natural Resources,or a related discipline from an accredited university or college and 2 - 3 years of professional experience in a GIS related field or discipline
  • Professional experience using ArcGIS software to design informative and concise maps
  • Familiarity with environmental risk reviews
  • Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong organization skills and ability to handle time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a rapidly changing environment
  • Articulate with the ability to assist with management, client, and public presentations
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong passion for renewable energy
  • Exemplary standards of safety, honor, ethics, quality, communication, and productivity

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment in a work-from-home or via alocal office in the project area. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
