YOUTH COUNCIL LEADER
YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES OFFICE
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for Youth Council Leader for the Division of Youth Opportunities (DYO) within the Department of Health and Human Services. Under the Direction of the Program Coordinator, the City Manager's Youth Council aims to serve as a voice of power for youth in Worcester. The program focuses on amplifying the voices of youth, fostering respect between adults and youth, advocating for youth's social emotional needs to be centered in all spaces serving youth, and motivating youth to grow, play, and thrive in the City of Worcester. The Youth Council Leaders will represent their district and work alongside the DYO staff to implement Youth Council programming. Council Leaders will meet two to five hours per week to engage in trainings and workshops, attend community meetings, recruit youth, and facilitate Youth Council general meetings, host and facilitate a series of youth town halls, and develop and implement a final civic/community action project.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Participate in two weekly meetings with DYO staff, occurring on Monday 4:30pm - 6:30pm & Wednesdays from 3pm - 5pm.
  • Attend community and City meetings and events
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and trainings for youth
  • Participate in data gathering aspects such as creating surveys and outreach
  • Identify youth issues within youth environments or gaps in youth services
  • Create proposals for the City Manager or City Council to make positive changes for youth.
  • Work on projects individually as well as part of the larger group

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Prior experience in leadership roles at work, school, extracurricular activities, sports, etc., and will have a strong passion for justice and creating a positive social change in our community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and networking skills with youth, colleagues, and community members
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to take initiative and follow through on commitments
  • Flexibility to work two (2) to five (5) hours per week

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prior experience in a leadership role (work, school, extracurricular activities, sports, and/or related field)
  • Must be a student within the Worcester schools
  • Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience facilitating and/or organizing youth activities and programming
  • Experience working with children and families from diverse cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities
  • Special interest in youth justice

SALARY: $15.00 hourly, part-time, temporary, non-benefitted.
