Job Description

Position Objective:

Coordinates patient throughput within the organization during all hours and works closely with the Nursing Logistics Coordinator when present. Relay barriers to patient throughput to assure maximum efficiency. The job duties affect direct patient care by completing tasks, which allow others to provide direct patient care. Collaborates with community partners to receive patients that will be direct admissions to the organization. Observes, monitors, and controls admission/patient flow from the ED, PACU, and outside facilities/offices. This individual may have to rotate various shifts within 24 hours, the likelihood being that shifts will be from 7a-7p or 7p-7a. Weekend rotations and holiday coverage are required to ensure the departmental needs are met to have coverage seven days a week.

  1. Coordinates hospital throughput and operations on assigned shifts by maintaining effective working relationships with and between departments. Directly works with the Nursing Logistics Coordinator to place patients. Fosters a good working relationship with our patient placement team to help facilitate patient movement among units and outside facilities.
  2. Utilizes the electronic medical record information for the needed information to assign the unit of care, e.g., such as diagnosis or using the determination made by the Logistics Coordinator or Nursing Operations Supervisor. Other duties may be assigned as tasks, and departmental objectives are updated.
  3. Observe barriers to patient throughput and proactively intervene to correct, e.g., transportation back-up increased EVS turnaround time. Notify the appropriate parties to facilitate correction of any identified barriers.
  4. Acts as a liaison to health team members in the community to coordinate patient admissions. Coordinates paging of the admitting physician for ED admissions. Coordinates and oversees the transfer center for the facility utilizes transfer center documentation for incoming admissions from outside facilities.
  5. Will review all admission orders for accuracy. Assesses and corrects work queues to identify inaccurate patient admission orders.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

Required Minimum Education: High school diploma required.

Required Minimum Experience:

  • Two years of customer service experience with working knowledge of basic computer skills and web-based applications, and the ability to perform data entry

Preferred Education/Experience:

Associates Degree; Prior registration or insurance experience in a healthcare environment.

Medical billing/patient placement experience in a hospital setting. Knowledge of medical terminology is desirable.

Skills & Abilities Required:

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Strong interpersonal skills required to communicate with various departments and staff members.

Working Conditions, Equipment, Physical Demands:

Medium work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to move an object.

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.
