Summary

Manager Data Science -APS is looking for a dynamic leader to establish and lead Data and Analytics Center of Excellence within its Digital Transformation organization. This position will lead the design, implementation, enhancement, and support of transformational industry solutions using data science that propel APS on its journey to digital utility. This leader will work hands on in design and implementation of business-critical data science solutions, will manage, develop, and mentor the data science team, and build and maintain strategic technological data science roadmap for APS. The successful candidate needs to have strong knowledge and experience in data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI), programming techniques and cloud technologies and excellent organizational and leadership skills.

Collaborates with various IT, business and vendor partners. Ensures customer satisfaction.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering or related field and minimum 8 years of related experience, of which at least 4 years of directly related data analytics, data science, predictive modeling, machine learning, statistical modeling experience OR advanced in the required fields and 4 years directly related data science, analytics experience. Minimum 2 years of leadership experience.
Strong knowledge and experience in Data Architecture and Data Modeling, Analytics, Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud computing, technology roadmap and implementation, Technology advising, strategy and leadership.


Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications: Masters or Doctorate degrees in related fields.

Certification in Data Science and/or predictive analytics. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and programming knowledge, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with demonstrated comparable knowledge and abilities.

Demonstrated proficiency in commonly used programming languages and tools like R Programming, Python and SQL.

Effective communication, presentation and writing skills. Experience in leading, developing and mentoring a team of data scientists in the evaluation and implementation of solutions. Ability to work with key internal and external stakeholders and all levels of management.
Major Accountabilities
1) Provides expertise and guidance to the team in the areas of data architecture and data modeling, analytics, Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. Provides vision, leadership and advise to the organization in these areas through technology roadmap, strategy and mentoring.
2) Plays direct role as solution lead in design and implementation of data science based digital solutions to various business problems.

3) Collaborates and consults with customers and partners, stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand business needs and operations, goals and objectives and key drivers for performance. Work closely with the business units to complete data analytics efforts. Build and maintain strong working relationships with customers, partners and vendors.

4) Identify available and relevant data and the data sources and collaborate with SMEs for data collection, preparation, integration, quality, exploration and retention.

Designs and implements solutions including data acquisition, storage, transformation, and analysis.

5) Designs, develops and deploys innovative models. Provides insights from predictive statistical modeling activities. Test theories by creating models and experimenting with data. Maintains knowledge of data transforming platforms and technologies and discipline maturity.

6) Perform data acquisition using JSon, SQL, ODBC, JScript, or API for big data extracts and use programming languages like R, Python, SQL, .net, Java or C++ to evoke the data from data source and model.- Transform and utilize streaming data with programming languages such as: KAFKA, SQL, Spark, and/or Azure.

7) Provide guidance and strategic direction mentorship and development to team of data scientists. Stays abreast of industry best practices and makes recommendations for solving business problems and evaluates changes required and impacts to APS.

Influences the strategic direction of the planning, functioning and advancement of data science and analytics practice within the organization.

8) Ensures departmental costs remain within approved budget.

Continually improves department work processes.

9) Develops unit level strategic plans that support corporate and IT plans.

Supports client planning process and prioritization for systems technology implementation. Assigns, directs, facilitates, reviews and approves unit work activities.

Ensure effectiveness and productivity of the work unit.

10) Maintains knowledge and understanding of business processes.

Manages, negotiates, and meets clients expectations.

11) Implements performance management programs.

Spends time with staff on performance focusing. Develops and retains a highly skilled technical team including a supervisory backup.

Actively seeks to improve own skills and knowledge to apply to current and emerging business and technical environment. Ensures appropriate staffing levels and that staff has technical skills and business skills to support objectives of the organization.

12) Acts to produce effective teams.

Ensures the development of a cooperative culture that supports team accomplishments.

13) Communicates issues openly and honestly with staff, peers, management and customers in a timely manner.

FlexRole:
This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from:

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.
  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.

*Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
