Who We Are
A generation of Kansas Citians has grown up with Community Blood Center (CBC). They know if they, or someone they love, needs blood in an emergency, CBC makes sure it’s available. But that hasn’t always been the case.

Over 60 years ago, there was no centralized blood collection and distribution agency to serve the greater Kansas City area and its surrounding counties. Instead, hospitals had to collect their own blood. If you needed blood, you had to rely on the kindness of your friends and relatives to donate blood on your behalf. Your life was in jeopardy if there was a blood shortage in your area or you had a rare blood type. That is why a group of community-minded physicians, hospitals, and civic leaders decided to organize Community Blood Center to serve the needs of patients in the community and to save lives.

Since opening in 1958, over 800,000 patients have received blood donated at CBC locations. CBC provides blood products to over 70 hospitals in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area, eastern Kansas and western Missouri. In addition, CBC provides high-quality reference immunohematology laboratory services, including platelet and red blood cell antibody testing, and therapeutic apheresis to local hospitals.

It is through the commitment of volunteer donors that CBC is able to maintain its heritage of service to our community.

Our Lifesaving Network
In 2018, CBC merged with New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe).  As a division of NYBCe, we are part of a network that is internationally recognized for its high humanitarian impact, including lifesaving blood products, specialty pharmaceuticals, and high-quality clinical, technical, testing, and consultative services for healthcare providers and patients. 3. Develop products, technologies, and services in the fields of hematology, blood banking, transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies with the potential to have worldwide humanitarian impact.
  4. Train the next generation of leaders in each of these fields.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Community Blood Center’s workforce and donor base includes diverse individuals of all races, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientation. We value diversity in our community, donors, and team members, and we work to treat all with fairness, equality and respect.

CBC has strived to build an inclusive environment that embraces diversity for all who engage with our lifesaving mission. For decades, we have strongly advocated for scientifically-based changes to the FDA policies about men who have sex with men (MSM) and support the shift to individual donor assessment to determine eligibility. The FDA has finalized recommendations for establishing a blood donor screening process based on Individual Donor Assessment.
