Job Description

MOOG Space and Defense

ASIC Design Engineer

Moog Broad Reach produces spaceflight hardware and software solutions, integrating vehicle design, component design and engineering services for aerospace, scientific, commercial and military customers on four continents. From proposal phase to ground testing, launch and on-orbit operations, we support each mission as scientific, technical and operational facilitators. On the product side, our radiation-hardened avionics and electronics include GPS/GNSS receivers, science payloads, motor controllers, high-quality flight-critical components, and single board computers powered by the next-generation BRE440 "system-on-a-chip" - the world's highest-performance radiation-hardened microprocessor.

With global product demand and mission criteria moving toward integrated commercial partnerships, lower costs and higher performance hardware and software requirements, Moog Broad Reach is positioned for growth in the new era of aerospace development. Our team of seasoned architects and engineers is dedicated to partnership with our customers for continued growth and success.

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under the direction of Engineering Manager, this position is responsible for the development of new digital application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology, products and/or processes to meet cost, schedule and performance goals. This position interfaces with high level personnel from Moog, our customers and partners.

DIMENSIONS:

Responsible for ongoing development programs with total annual costs of approximately $3M and internal research and development programs with annual budgets of up to $2M. This position also has "product" responsibility for support of existing ASIC products and upper level assemblies that utilize these ASICs.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position is responsible for both development and production functions.

The incumbent leads the design of ASIC devices for use within Moog products and for sale to customers as discrete devices. The incumbent provides valuable input into new ASIC design requirements and in conjunction with marketing inputs, frequently develops the specifications which direct new product design activity.

This position is one of technical leadership with respect to digital system and ASIC design and production. The incumbent will often work with other engineers (including vendors) in the design phase and be responsible for the overall progress of the project. Since the ASIC product will frequently be produced by external semiconductor vendors the incumbent must interface, consult and coordinate internal design and vendor capabilities to achieve a cost effective and reliable product which can be obtained on schedule.

The responsibilities of this position include design, development, analysis, testing, prototype and production, performance specifications, material specifications, failure analysis, test reports, proposal preparation, program scheduling and reviews, vendor and customer interface, and cost estimates.

The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of his/her discipline and the additional capabilities needed to support the program, in advance, in order to develop a team, either internal or external, that can provide the required resources effectively.

This position may assist in training less experienced engineering personnel and at times may have one or more people assigned to him/her for this purpose. Participation in various training activities is also required for the incumbent to remain current in their field.

POSITION ATTRIBUTES:

The incumbent should possess the following required experience:

A BSEE Degree and at least ten years experience or a MSEE Degree and six years experience is required.

High level of competence in the VHDL or VERILOG digital design languages.

High level of competence in digital design including discrete low level functions and abstracted high level constructs.

Capable of creating low level ASIC design requirements from high level specifications.

Capable of architecting and designing the internal logic of a complex digital ASIC.

High level of familiarity with ASIC packaging technology and capable of making tradeoffs towards choosing the appropriate package design for a complex digital ASIC.

Ability to create digital system architectures that consist of embedded microprocessors, state machines, high speed I/O, memory and cache structures.

Ability to write RTL for synthesis based on requirements.

Capable of writing test vectors and test cases for ASIC design verification.

Experienced using System Verilog or System C for verification and validation.

Capable of performing model based design and verification using high level modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or similar.

Experienced using digital simulation tools such as Mentor Graphics Modelsim or Synopsys.

Experienced in performing behavioral simulation after synthesis.

Capable of ASIC prototyping using FPGAs.

Understanding of the semiconductor fabrication process for current and future process technology.

Knowledge of current and future semiconductor design trends.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Functions as lead engineer on programs assigned and acts as the subject matter expert.

Reviews customer specifications or requirements and prepares technical proposal information. Also responsible for the development of engineering cost estimates.

Initiates applications of new technology and processes into product design/production.

Generates design concepts, design tradeoff studies and prepares presentations for design or customer reviews.

Interacts frequently with customers, business partners and vendors coordinating technical, cost and product matters.

Follows and oversees prototype and production hardware through procurement, fabrication and test phases.

Reviews, authenticates and approves necessary documentation. As necessary, the incumbent will initiate design reviews which will include representatives from design, quality and manufacturing (inside and outside vendors/partners when applicable).

The incumbent will produce design documentation such as user manuals and data sheets for digital ASICs.

Designs complex digital ASICs using modern design methods to include RTL generation and simulation.

The incumbent will be required to effectively communicate and convince people, customers, management and vendors, on the relative merits of various issues.

Prepares technical reports or summaries on product performance, reliability, failure modes, development or qualification testing.

Keep current in the technology and informed of new processes, methods and advances in applicable fields.
